Partial closure of Bullen Range Nature Reserve to protect Peregrine Falcons

Red Rocks Cliff in Bullen Range Nature Reserve (near Kambah Pool) will be formally closed under the Nature Conservation Act 2014 from Thursday 1 August to Tuesday 31 December to protect Peregrine Falcons during their breeding season.

Executive Branch Manager of ACT Parks and Conservation Service Michaela Watts said the Red Rocks cliffs in the Bullen Range Nature Reserve will be temporarily closed to the public during the Peregrine Falcon breeding season.

“We’re entering the breeding season for our spectacular Peregrine Falcons. These birds are highly sensitive to human activity during their breeding season so even minor disturbances can greatly disrupt their nesting sites,” Ms Watts said.

“Respecting this closure and giving the falcons appropriate space is crucial for the success of the breeding season and the survival of this small population. This will give these remarkable birds the peace they need to raise fledglings free of disturbance.

“Red Rocks Cliff, located on the western side of the Murrumbidgee River, is one of only seven breeding locations for Peregrine Falcons in the ACT. They spend most of the year happily sharing the cliffs with rock-climbers. I’m thankful to our rock-climbing community for their patience and cooperation each year as we close the cliff for a few short months.

“I remind the community that the use of drones in ACT parks and reserves is prohibited year-round. Drones can also disturb these sensitive falcons and other species in our parks.

“While the cliff is closed, I encourage the community to explore or rediscover many other great options along the Murrumbidgee River Corridor,” said Ms Watts.

Alternative options for rock climbers include:

  • Bee Crag – on the Murrumbidgee Discovery Track, approximately 2.2km to the north of Kambah Pool.
  • Kambah Rocks – located off the Murrumbidgee Discovery Track, approximately 1km downstream of Red Rocks cliff.
  • Little Pine – 5 minutes’ walk from Pine Island carpark near the playground.

The Conservator of Flora and Fauna has authorised this closure under the Nature Conservation Act 2014. Rangers will be visiting the area to remind climbers of the closure. Prosecution and penalties may apply for non-compliance.
