Nillumbik Shire Council is committed to working collaboratively to address climate change.
We are proud to announce new partnerships with four key organisations to help us achieve our climate action goals and to support our community in reducing their carbon footprint.
Our new partnerships are with:
- Cities Power Partnerships (CPP)
- Solar Savers
- The Australian Energy Foundation (AEF)
- Clean Energy Nillumbik.
The Cities Power Partnership is Australia’s largest local government climate network made up of 129 councils from across the country.
By joining the network, council has made five pledges to tackle climate change. These are:
- Use Council resources to support the uptake of renewable energy
- Install renewable energy on council buildings
- Investigate using Council-managed land for renewable energy
- Roll out energy efficient lighting across the municipality
- Support local community energy groups with community energy initiatives.
Council has again partnered with Solar Savers to help Nillumbik residents access affordable, high-quality solar through a bulk buy program.
Our partnership with the Australian Energy Foundation also gives residents the opportunity to connect with reliable suppliers of renewable and energy efficient products.
Clean Energy Nillumbik will be running the Council-funded Practically Green series of sustainable events with the theme re-imagine, re-think and re-energise. This year’s events will be held virtually and include Sustainable House Day on 19 and 20 September, and Speed Date a Sustainability Expert on 18 October.
Mayor Karen Egan said each of the new partnerships supported Council’s climate action goals and would provide the community ways they, too, can contribute to affecting change.
“We all have a role to play in addressing climate change. Together, even small actions can make a big difference,” Cr Egan said.
“We are excited to be a member of CPP’s climate network and will continue to take on projects to act on climate change.
“We are already on our way to achieving many of our pledges. Every Council building has received some form of retrofit energy efficiency upgrade and 45 buildings already have rooftop solar to help reduce Councils grid-sourced energy consumption.
“We are also investigating establishing a solar farm at the former Plenty landfill site to supply Council’s electricity needs, and are exploring options for community involvement.”
Chair of Council’s Environment and Sustainability Portfolio, Cr Jane Ashton, said Council was committed to helping residents reduce their carbon footprint.
“Solar Savers is a great initiative and has helped dozens of residents transition to solar energy in the past few months. We’re excited to be working with them again to help more households easily install quality and affordable rooftop solar.
“Through AEF, residents will have access to not only renewable and energy efficient products, but also free practical advice to help reduce household emissions and energy bills.
“I’m also really excited to again take part in the upcoming Practically Green virtual events, which are being run by Clean Energy Nillumbik. I learnt so much from last year’s Sustainable House Day and Speed Date a Sustainability Expert and am looking forward to the different activities on offer.”
