Passion For Flight And Film

RAAF

Sergeant Nicholas Atterton, a resource planner for 11 Squadron at RAAF Base Edinburgh, recently merged duty and nostalgia as he encountered a replica DeLorean – the iconic car from Back to the Future.

In a morale-boosting effort, the vehicle was brought onto base to support the Edinburgh Formation Welfare family day.

In the Integrated Planning Cell of 11 Squadron, Sergeant Atterton’s daily routine involves organising maintenance priorities and ensuring operational readiness. But beneath the uniform lies a deep-rooted love for science fiction, particularly the Back to the Future series.

“I grew up renting VHS tapes, and the Back to the Future movies were among my favourites,” he said.

“They sparked my interest in mechanics and eventually led me to aviation.”

Sergeant Atterton’s childhood fascination with flying cars and futuristic technology fuelled his enthusiasm for his role in Air Force.

He has dedicated nearly two decades to RAAF, with 12 years at 11 Squadron and time spent serving in New South Wales and Western Australia.

Sitting behind the wheel of the iconic replica was both thrilling and nostalgic, reminding him of his vintage car adventures and his strong passion for science and physics.

“I own an old Valiant, which has its quirks, just like the DeLorean,” Sergeant Atterton said.

“It drives like an ’80s classic, but it’s an experience every gearhead can appreciate.”

His love for cars and aircraft intertwines, showcasing a life driven by passion and dedication.

Sergeant Atterton highlights the importance of sharing these passions with others, especially within the military community.

“Connecting through interests like these can create camaraderie among service members and their families,” he said.

“It’s vital for us to share our stories and experiences.”

With nearly 20 years of service, Sergeant Atterton offers a perspective on the importance of making the most of every moment.

“My message to junior aviators is to not let your service be a fleeting experience. Engage fully and cherish all connections and opportunities around you,” he said.

Sergeant Atterton stands as a testament to how personal interests can enrich military life, reminding us that the heart of service lies in shared experiences and dreams, both on and off the base.
