Patients Rate Hospital Care Highly In Western NSW

Adult patients treated at Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) hospitals in 2023 have reported very positive experiences of care, with almost all patients (95 per cent) rating their overall care as ‘very good’ or ‘good’.

The Bureau of Health Information’s 2023 Adult Admitted Patient Survey, released today, asked admitted patients about their experiences across a range of important aspects of care. More than 1,500 patients responded in WNSWLHD, providing positive feedback on the safe, compassionate, high-quality care they received.

The District’s dedicated health professionals also received very high ratings from their patients. Almost all surveyed patients (97 per cent) rated the nurses who treated them as ‘very good’ or ‘good’, and a similarly high proportion (95 per cent) rated the doctors who treated them as ‘very good’ or ‘good’.

WNSWLHD Chief Executive Mark Spittal thanked patients for their feedback and said the survey results are a testament to the ongoing commitment of staff to providing the highest quality of care to patients.

“Our staff work tirelessly to provide the best possible healthcare for our patients, and I am incredibly proud to see both our staff and services rated so favourably. In many areas our results were higher than the NSW average,” Mr Spittal said.

“My gratitude to our staff, who continue to show their unwavering commitment and dedication every single day, cannot be overstated.”

Mudgee Health Service was one of the top-performing hospitals in the state, performing strongly compared to state-wide averages in 24 of the survey’s key measures. Almost all patients (97 per cent) rated their care at Mudgee Health Service as ‘very good’ or ‘good’.

Cowra Health Service also performed strongly in 12 of the survey’s key measures compared to state-wide averages. Almost all surveyed patients (98 per cent) rated their overall care at the facility as ‘very good’ or ‘good’.

Health professionals rated similarly well at Cowra, with 98 per cent of surveyed patients rating the doctors who treated them as ‘very good’ or ‘good’, while all surveyed patients (100 per cent) said the nurses who cared for them were ‘very good’ or ‘good’.

Bathurst Health Service also performed strongly, notably improving in nine key measures across the survey compared to 2022, and rating significantly higher than the state-wide average in three key measures.

“Surveys like this show us what we are doing well but they also provide insight into where we can improve further. These results are particularly gratifying in terms of the many improvements made across Western NSW,” Mr Spittal said.

Other findings in WNSWLHD:

Orange Health Service:

  • 96 per cent of surveyed patients rated their overall care as ‘very good’ or ‘good’
  • Nearly all surveyed patients (98 per cent) rated the nurses who treated them as ‘very good’ or ‘good’
  • Nearly all surveyed patients (97 per cent) rated the doctors who treated them as ‘very good’ or ‘good’

Dubbo Health Service:

  • 94 per cent of surveyed patients rated their overall care as ‘very good’ or ‘good’
  • Nearly all surveyed patients (97 per cent) rated the nurses who treated them as ‘very good’ or ‘good’
  • More than nine in 10 surveyed patients (93 per cent) rated the doctors who treated them as ‘very good’ or ‘good’

Bathurst Health Service:

  • 95 per cent of surveyed patients rated their overall care as ‘very good’ or ‘good’
  • Nearly all surveyed patients (99 per cent) rated the nurses who treated them as ‘very good’ or ‘good’
  • Nearly all surveyed patients (96 per cent) rated the doctors who treated them as ‘very good’ or ‘good’
  • Nearly nine in 10 surveyed patients (87 per cent) said they ‘would speak highly’ of their hospital experience.

Mudgee Health Service

  • Nearly all surveyed patients (99 per cent) rated the nurses who treated them as ‘very good’ or ‘good’
  • Nearly all surveyed patients (98 per cent) rated the doctors who treated them as ‘very good’ or ‘good’
  • More than nine in 10 (93 per cent) of surveyed patients said the hospital was ‘very clean’
  • More than nine in 10 (93 per cent) of surveyed patients said they were ‘always’ treated with respect and dignity.

Cowra Health Service

  • Nearly all surveyed patients (95 per cent) said they were ‘always’ treated with respect and kindness
  • Nearly all surveyed patients (97 per cent) said health professionals were ‘always’ kind and caring
  • Nearly all (99 per cent) of surveyed patients said they ‘always’ or ‘to some extent’ had confidence and trust in health professionals

Forbes Hospital

  • 97 per cent of surveyed patients rated their overall care as ‘very good’ or ‘good’
  • Nearly all surveyed patients (95 per cent) rated the nurses who treated them as ‘very good’ or ‘good’
  • More than nine in 10 surveyed patients (94 per cent) rated the doctors who treated them as ‘very good’ or ‘good’
  • More than nine in 10 (94 per cent) of surveyed patients said staff were ‘definitely’ polite and welcoming on arrival.
  • More than nine in 10 (92 per cent) of surveyed patients said the hospital was ‘very clean’
