Patrols of local beaches begins

Lifeguards and surf club members throughout the Kempsey Shire are reminding beach goers to swim between the flags and be mindful of conditions with patrols of local beaches now underway.

The start of the 2019/2020 season was officially marked locally on Saturday, 28 September with the Raising of the Flags event at South West Rocks.

As well as surf club members, Council lifeguards will be patrolling the beaches during the school holidays.

Don’t forget the lifeguards top safety tips:

  • Always swim between the red and yellow flags
  • Read the safety signs
  • Ask a lifeguard for safety advice
  • Swim with a friend
  • If you need help, stay calm and attract attention

Council lifeguards and Surf Club members will ensure that beaches are patrolled every day during the spring holidays from 10am at:

  • Crescent Head
  • Grassy Head
  • Hat Head
  • Horseshoe Bay, South West Rocks
  • Main Beach, South West Rocks

Council’s Director of Operations and Planning, Robert Fish, said it is important that residents and visitors swim between the flags when visiting the beach.

“While the Macleay Valley has some of the most beautiful waterways it is important to ensure the safety of yourself and others by swimming at a patrolled beach,” Mr Fish said.

“As well as swimming within the red and yellow flags beachgoers should also take notice of any signs on or around the beach for their own safety.”

Residents and visitors can access information on local beach conditions and safety information via or download the Surf Life Saving Australia Beachsafe app.
