The future of Penrose Park at Silverton in the state’s far west has been secured thanks to a $2.2 million investment in upgrades from the NSW Government.
Minister for Lands and Water Kevin Anderson said Crown Lands upgrades to amenities, water connections and electrical supplies will ensure the Crown reserve remains in top condition for the local community.
“Penrose Park is like an oasis in the desert for the thousands of people who use it each year, and these upgrades and improvements will ensure people can continue to relax and enjoy the park’s beautiful gum trees in the stunning red-dirt landscape,” Mr Anderson said.
“This major investment will help the tourism industry draw visitors to the Broken Hill region and support local jobs, while also maintaining an iconic park that has been close to the heart of community life for more than a century.”
On average, Penrose Park accepts around 3,500 bookings a year, for its powered and unpowered camp sites, bunk houses, ensuite cabins and cottage.
The upgrade will deliver a new amenities block with showers, toilets and facilities that are accessible for people with wheelchairs. The caretaker’s cottage will be reclad and will also get a new roof and downpipes to ensure it is weathertight.
Electrical and water upgrades will include new power and water connections to powered sites, new piping, septic tanks and sewage treatment plant, fire hydrants and hose reels, and new electrical switchboard and distribution boards.
Penrose Park caretaker Terina Cowdrey said the upgrade would help boost park visits.
“These planned improvements are very positive and will help us attract and host more overnight stays and also make the park better for day visitors, bringing more people to Silverton for tourism,” Ms Cowdrey said.
