Police have commenced an enforcement operation targeting the dangerous use of personal mobility devices across Brisbane.
Beginning on Monday, officers have been targeting areas across the city where there is increased traffic from riders of private and ride-share devices.
Acting Sergeant Duncan Hill said the rise in popularity of e-scooters and e-skateboards meant we all needed to be aware of the risks they can pose, both to riders and others in the community, if safety is not considered.
“Since Monday, we have issued 80 infringements to riders not wearing a helmet,” he said.
“More than 50 were detected exceeding the speed limit of 25km/h around pedestrians and other road users.
“We really need riders to understand that their actions while riding these devices are real and can cause serious injury to themselves or those around them.”
Transport and Main Roads General Manager of Land Transport Safety and Regulation Andrew Mahon reiterated the need for riders to think about their safety before riding.
“We are always working to make sure everyone can enjoy our roads, walkways and a greener mode of transport together,” he said.
“But improper use of these devices can have serious consequence, so we need riders to adhere to the rules – always wear a helmet, don’t exceed the speed limit and don’t drink and ride.”
Since Monday, 138 infringements have been issued, including:
• 80 for not wearing a helmet
• 52 for exceeding the speed limit
• 1 for using a mobile phone while driving
The operation concludes on Sunday and will continue to target areas across the Brisbane CBD during peak hours, including the Safe Night Precincts.
