Labor Candidate for Gilmore, Fiona Phillips joined musician and environmental activist Peter Garrett for a community forum on the Environment
Over 150 locals packed into the Huskisson community centre to discuss the environmental issues that matter to them most. The forum identified action on climate change and the threat of nuclear power as top issues in the local election campaign.
Peter Garrett spoke of his role working with the community in the campaign to ‘Save Jervis Bay’ and took aim at Liberal Candidate for Gilmore, Warren Mundine’s strong pro nuclear stance.
“Mundine is a scandal on two legs and a cheer leader for extremely expensive, dangerous, unnecessary and uninsurable nuclear power “.
With solar and wind increasingly providing a safe source of energy, the last thing the community needs is a radioactive waste plant on the beautiful South Coast.
“The people of Gilmore couldn’t have a starker choice locally. A pro nuclear candidate who won’t act on climate change or a fair dinkum local who will act on the climate emergency and invest in renewables”
“Scott Morrison has not ruled out nuclear power and with the Liberals in chaos there is no way of ruling it out. Given that its Commonwealth land they could easily attempt a nuclear reactor in Jervis Bay”
“If you want to see real action to protect our environment – vote Labor. If you want action on climate change – vote for Fiona Phillips”.
Fiona Phillips reaffirmed her strong position against a nuclear power.
“As a local, I have a message for the Liberals – a nuclear reactor is not welcome in our community. Not on my watch”
“My position on nuclear power has always been clear and consistent”.
We need real change – because more of the same is not good enough”
“This election is a choice is between a Federal Labor Government that can deliver a real plan to protect the environment and invest in our children’s future, or more of the Liberals’ climate change denial”
Phillips outlined Labor ‘s plan to invest more than $1 billion in new environment programs to protect local beaches and coastlines, clean up the nation’s rivers, double the number of Indigenous Rangers caring for country, and invest in a South Coast renewables hub and local jobs.
