Enchanting songs carrying universal messages, ‘Fate’ is the brand new single from Blue Mountains based Folk/Rock duo Piperlain, the follow up single from the EP ‘Shine on You.’ Recorded, mixed and mastered at Fireswamp Studios by engineer Josh Schuberth (Josh Pyke, Amber Lawrence, The Wolfe Brothers, Fanny Lumsden), in The Blue Mountains. Produced by Josh Schuberth and Benjamin Knight.
A heartfelt track, ‘Fate’ combines indie folk and folktronica with progressive pop/rock sounds, tribal percussion, and Middle Eastern influences. The cross genre and eclectic style of Piperlain is present in the track and draws upon alternative folk/rock/pop, world music and percussive elements with the use of instruments including the djembe and 12-string guitar.
“Fate is about a new relationship in the beginning. Something special is forming between two people, but one must depart on a trip. The song is about the journey of excitement, anticipation, and contemplation of a romantic future, as well as the anxiety and desperation of waiting for someone special to return. Then, realising that when they do come back, that they have a special connection and can start their journey together. The track uses sustained guitar created with an EBow to create a mystical, ambient sound that acts as a counterpart to the heartfelt lead vocal and also compliments the sustained vocals in the bridge section, which was written with the ocean in mind, to represent the waves of anxiety and anticipation, also a metaphor for the departure and return” Rebecca Voorn-Knight.
Recorded on-site in The Blue Mountains, surrounded by world heritage national park and magnificent landscapes, ‘Fate’ continues the style of embracing a more organic sound. The result is an enchanting song with mystical and ambient guitar and rhythmic percussive elements combined with lofty, honest vocals. Piperlain combines the sounds of indie, alternative pop/folk/rock with emotive, passionate vocals.
Formed by singer/songwriters Benjamin Knight and Rebecca Voorn-Knight, the Piperlain sound has been compared to a contemporary version of The Cranberries and The Corrs with similarities to Sarah Blasko and Josh Pyke. Piperlain made the finals of the B&T Madweek Battle of the Bands where they received commendation from Sony on live performance and songwriting talent. In 2017 Piperlain released the concept album ‘Mother Mourned’, which recounts the personal and emotional journey of two people growing up with and caring for mothers with serious illnesses.
“Mother Mourned…a devastating, tragically beautiful concept album…full of confessional lyrics and understated, quietly devastating instrumentation” Joseph Earp – The Brag
Receiving positive praise from industry professionals and media outlets, ‘Fate’ is the follow up single to the EP ‘Shine On You’ released in February 2023 and follows the 2021 release of the EP ‘Time’, which highlighted the breadth of the duo’s songwriting abilities. In 2022 ‘Time’ was nominated for an AIR award and Piperlain was an official entrant in the 2022 ARIA awards and the 2023 ARIA awards for ‘Shine on You’ for Best Independent Release.
