Plan ahead and commemorate safely on Anzac Day 2019, NSW

The NSW Police Force is urging members of the community to plan ahead and commemorate the spirit of Anzac safely and respectfully.

Large crowds are expected to attend commemoration services and events across the state on Thursday (25 April 2019) to remember those who lost their lives in service to their country.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Tony Cooke said people should act appropriately on one of the country’s most important national days in honour of our fallen soldiers.

“Anzac Day is about honouring and remembering all those who fought, endured, suffered and died to defend our rights and maintain our freedom,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Cooke said.

“A high-visibility police operation, involving general duties officers assisted by specialist commands, will be in place across the Sydney CBD with officers keeping an eye out for dangerous, criminal or anti-social behaviour.

“Although this year’s Anzac Day falls mid-week, we are still anticipating large crowds, so remember the reasons for commemorating this day and act in the true Anzac spirit – look out for your mates,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Cooke said.

“Key locations such as Martin Place, Bondi and Cronulla attract many people who gather before the sun rises to honour our fallen soldiers.

“This year the route for the Anzac Day CBD march will be on Elizabeth Street, with the Act of Remembrance observed,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Cooke said.

“It will be a busy weekend on the state’s roads, as Anzac Day falls straight after the Easter break and within the school holidays, so please take it easy as you travel to and from commemorations.

“Public transport is the best option for anyone planning to watch the march, and police encourage people to allow plenty of time to travel and find a good spot along the route.

“A number of road closures, clearways and traffic diversions will be in place within Sydney’s CBD so if you have to drive, please allow plenty of time,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Cooke said.
