Water Polo Orange is back, COVID safe and is experiencing a boost in registrations ahead of its season opening this month.’Come and Try’ sessions are on again October 15 and 22 from 5.30pm, where anyone can come along, jump in the pool and learn a few basics about water polo before committing to joining a team.
Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said the water polo competition was another way the Orange Aquatic Centre was able to diversify the activities it offered.
“From the littlest of bubs doing water confidence sessions, to school children learning to swim, to older customers experiencing the benefits of aqua aerobics, and now water polo, the local pool has specialised activities for all age groups and abilities,” Cr Kidd said.
Orange City Council’s Sport and Recreation Policy Committee Chair Cr Jason Hamling said he was pleased to see sport returning to a semblance of normality.
“Sport is a crucial part of life in terms of people’s mental and physical health,” Cr Hamling said.
“Given how tough this year has been on so many people, I’m really glad we can put sensible measures in place to get sports like water polo back up and running.
“One of the major benefits of water polo for kids is that it encourages water safety and basic swimming skills, so while the kids have fun and play sport, they are also becoming more confident in the water.
“The Aquatic Centre is particularly keen to encourage kids between 9 and 12 for its junior competition.”
The competition, played at the Orange Aquatic Centre’s outdoor 50 metre pool, is open to all abilities and new players are encouraged to sign up.
COVID safe measures include keeping contact tracing records, reduced number of spectators permitted, and players are asked to leave the venue as soon as the game has finished.
Registrations are now open for all levels. Anyone who doesn’t have a team can still join and they will be placed in a side.
Games start October 29 from 4pm for Juniors, Intermediates 4.30pm, 5pm and 5.30pm time slots and Opens from 6pm – 8pm, every Thursday with training on Tuesday evenings.
