- Lotterywest grant to deliver adventure playground at Spoilbank Marina
- Town of Port Hedland to manage project’s design, construction and management
- Playground set to become a social hub for families in the town
Port Hedland’s new Spoilbank Marina precinct will include an interactive, adventure playground for children and families, courtesy of funding from the Cook Government.
The Town of Port Hedland has been successful in securing a $4 million grant through Lotterywest to design and build the playground which will become a key feature of the Spoilbank Marina precinct.
Recent census data for the Port Hedland local government area shows 17.6 per cent of the population is aged under 10 compared to the State average of 12.6 per cent.
It is envisaged the new playground will become a social hub for visitors and families living in Port Hedland and neighbouring communities.
The playground will include secure perimeter fencing, shade structures, native trees and shrubs and wetpour rubber softfall surfaces in play areas.
Meanwhile work managed by Pilbara Ports continues at the Spoilbank Marina precinct with construction expected to be completed later this year.
The $187 million project is funded by the State Government, Town of Port Hedland and BHP.
As stated by Ports Minister David Michael:
“I congratulate the Town of Port Hedland for securing funds for the playground, which will not only provide enjoyment for children but also contribute to the social fabric of the town.
“I’m pleased that Lotterywest funding can be spent on such an important project that will no doubt lift the entire Spoilbank Marina precinct.
“I look forward to returning to Port Hedland when the project is complete and residents and visitors can make use of the world-class facilities at the marina.”
As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:
“This playground will become a focal point and gathering place for families across Port Hedland.
“Having the foresight to pursue such a project as part of the Spoilbank Marina development is a feather in the cap of the Town of Port Hedland.”
As stated by Town of Port Hedland Mayor Peter Carter:
“Investment in quality spaces for regional communities enhances liveability and helps build a family-friendly, vibrant and cohesive community.
“This playground at Spoilbank Marinawill support essential social connections amongst families and create inclusive opportunities for children to play, explore andthrive.”
