The proposed Central Playing Fields at The Hills’ newest suburb, Gables, are one step closer with The Hills Shire Council resolving at an Ordinary Meeting of Council to enter into a funding agreement with the Department of Planning and Environment and a delivery agreement with Stockland Developments for the establishment of the fields.
Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Peter Gangemi, said the move will allow for the creation of a dedicated hockey field and Council will call for expressions of interest for a hockey partner – a move designed to encourage the sport at premier level in The Hills.
“This is an excellent outcome for our Shire’s growth areas with high level facilities on offer for local residents,” Mayor Gangemi said.
“The Hills continues to attract elite level sport, and through this EOI process, I look forward to seeing elite hockey played in the Gables with homegrown talent.
“Importantly, these agreements mean that upgrading this facility to premier level has come at no additional cost to Council or residents.”
The main components of the modified proposal include a dedicated hockey field with flood lighting, a multi-use floodlit playing field, car parking area, spectator seating facilities and the inclusion of a dog off-leash area.
Subject to final approval, the complex is also intended to be home to multi-use courts, a fenced dog off-leash area, a futsal warm-up space, junior adventure playground and teen zone with skate area, table tennis and an outdoor gym.
“This proposal now has everything a new community needs. I’d like to congratulate residents on their high level of engagement with more than 320 comments received,” Mayor Gangemi said.
“Great communities are made by working together, and I’m delighted that people have taken the opportunity to become involved in planning this essential part of their community that will serve them well both now, and in the future.”
Students at the nearby Santa Sophia College will also benefit from shared use of the future playing fields. Construction is planned to begin in late 2022, with completion scheduled for mid-2023, weather permitting.
