In response to the Australian Government’s announcement of its updated climate change policy, Oxfam Chief Executive Lyn Morgain said:
“As the Liberal and ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ parties have argued over this long-term goal, the rest of the world has moved on. Other wealthy countries have not only increased their ambitions for 2030, but dramatically boosted their climate finance commitments to support the most at-risk countries adapt to the impacts of climate change, which they are already experiencing.
“Without shorter term targets based on science at keeping the world below 1.5 degrees of warming, the government’s climate plan falls short of what is needed to get the job done. The Prime Minister must put a number on our 2030 target that will allow us to reach Net Zero well ahead of 2050 and ensure the planet is protected from catastrophic temperature rises.
“Prime Minister Morrison should also respond to calls from Pacific leaders seeking an increase in our climate finance commitment to meet our fair share. He should take to COP26 a pledge to increase our climate finance commitment to $3 billion over five years, to allow our neighbours in the Pacific and other at-risk countries to prepare to mitigate against and adapt to climate change impacts.”
