Port Macquarie Hastings Council is launching Graffiti Awareness Days, as part of a coordinated approach to combat the issue.
The Awareness Days are designed to provide the community with a detailed overview about PMHC’s Graffiti Management Plan – as well as important information about how they can get involved.
The events will involve other community stakeholders, including law enforcement, representatives from other levels of government and other local organisations.
PMHC are taking a multi-layered approach to the problem, including:
- installing public murals to deter vandals
- investigating simpler approaches to reporting
- running a volunteer program to remove graffiti more promptly
- sourcing graffiti removal packs for residents
- implementing a reward scheme, to encourage more reporting
Lucilla Marshall, Group Manager of Community, said the goal is to recruit more members of the community to help make a bigger impact – as it is a whole of society problem.
“We are hard at work implementing our Graffiti Management Plan – but we believe more success will be achieved through a whole of community approach,” she said.
“If we all work together, we will be so much more effective in stopping this issue. We understand graffiti is having a huge impact on local residents and businesses.”
“We are proud of our communities, which are exciting and vibrant places. We want everyone to be able to enjoy public spaces and we take pride in our towns. Graffiti makes our spaces less appealing, for both locals and visitors.”
The first Awareness Day is being held at Bain Park in Wauchope on Friday, 21 October from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM.
