Planning Minister Rita Saffioti has approved an amendment to the local planning scheme to stop a controversial marina development at Point Grey, on the Peel-Harvey Estuary, from proceeding.
The Minister’s decision follows the recommendation made by the Western Australian Planning Commission.
The amendment removes potential for the development of a marina at Point Grey, responding to concerns about the suitability of the site in the context of potential long-term environmental impacts, and uncertainty about ongoing maintenance and upkeep.
The move to embed this change in the local planning scheme received overwhelming support from the local community and was unopposed by developers.
As stated by Planning Minister Rita Saffioti:
“I am pleased to approve this amendment ending an extended period of planning uncertainty.
“This amendment follows the recommendation made by the WA Planning Commission.
“The decision ensures any development is suited to the environment and is viable for the long term.”
As stated by Murray-Wellington MLA Robyn Clarke:
“This amendment is a huge win for our local community and will put a stop to this flawed project once and for all.
“Well done to all our community members who stood up for our beautiful part of WA.
“We have been fighting against this for years and as the Member for Murray-Wellington I am glad that this marina and development won’t be going ahead in my electorate.”

“I have been fighting against this marina for many years and I am so pleased to see the end of this project.
“Thank you to everyone who stood up against this proposal – we did it!”
As stated by Dawesville MLA Lisa Munday:
“We have some of the most beautiful waterways in the Peel region, teeming with birds, marine life and sea grasses. It does not make sense to tarnish these waters with a badly thought-out marina.
“Now this proposal is behind us we can get on with the job of continuing to deliver our election commitments for the Peel region.”
