A Broken Hill man will face court on numerous driving charges after he was clocked travelling at 197km/h near Jamestown in the state’s mid-north yesterday.
Just before 4pm on Friday 26 July, a police patrol was on speed detection duties on the R M Williams Highway, just north of Jamestown when they detected a black Holden Statesman travelling at 197km/h in a 110km/h zone.
The police patrol lost sight of the car just after it continued through Jamestown, but they became aware the driver of the vehicle had been banned for driving for 24 hours, after he was stopped earlier in the day and test positive for amphetamine and was driving unlicensed.
A police patrol spotted the black Statesman not quite 20 minutes later travelling at 149kph in a 110 zone, this time heading north along the Augusta Highway at Warnertown.
The vehicle was followed into Port Pirie by an unmarked patrol car where it stopped at an address in Pirie Street.
The driver a 47-year-old man was subsequently arrested and charged with driving at a speed and manner dangerous, disobeying a driver direction, driving unlicensed and drug driving after he failed another drug test, with a positive result to methamphetamine.
His car was also defected and impounded for 28 days.
A search of the driver also resulted in the location of a small quantity of cannabis and amphetamines.
The arrested man has been refused bail and will appear in the Port Pirie Magistrates Court on Monday.
