Police assaulted – Galiwinku

Galiwinku Police have charged a 29-year-old man after he allegedly assaulted police at a football game on Friday 11 October.

Police were called to Galiwinku Oval around 8:00pm when a number of agitated people gathered at the conclusion of the game. The crowd moved from the oval when the 29-year-old man began punching people. As police were placing the man under arrest, he spat blood on a police officer and threw a rock. The man was eventually subdued and taken into custody. He was charged and is due to appear before Galiwinku Local Court in December.

Separately, police conducted drug and alcohol screening of vehicles and aircraft prior to the game. As a result, police located and seized 5.8 litres of rum and 122 grams of kava from aircraft which arrived from Nhulunbuy. Further searches throughout the weekend located another 2.5 litres of rum and one litre of homebrew alcohol.

Senior Sergeant Daniel Whitfield-Jones said AFL and other sports help tie the fabric of communities together by promoting positive social interactions.

“It should be a time when the community can come together in a place of safety to barrack for their teams in good natured rivalry. Police will not tolerate grog running, violence and any other unlawful activity that would seek to destroy positive communities. We will continue to take the necessary actions to keep our communities safe”.
