A man has been charged after a pursuit in Sydney’s south-west.
Just after 11pm yesterday (Friday 16 June 2023), officers from Cumberland Highway Patrol attempted to stop a vehicle after it was allegedly seen travelling through a red traffic control signal at the intersection of Guildford Road and Woodville Road, Guildford.
When the vehicle failed to stop a pursuit was initiated.
The vehicle was pursued into Chiswick Road where it will be alleged that the vehicle reached speeds of up to 140km/h.
Due to safety reasons the pursuit was terminated.
A short time later the vehicle collided with a retaining wall at the intersection of Clyde Street and Chiswick Road before crashing into a parked car and then coming to rest on its side.
The driver – a 37-year-old man – attempted to run from the scene but was restrained by a nearby resident whom he allegedly assaulted. The 27-year-old man suffered minor injuries.
Officers were called to the scene where the driver threw a small bag of cannabis at police before he was arrested.
The man was taken to Merrylands Police Station where he underwent an oral fluid test that returned a positive reading to an illicit substance. Further analysis of the sample will be undertaken before any further action is taken.
A breath test returned a negative result to alcohol.
He was charged with seven offences including;
- Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously
- Drive in dark no lights
- Negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm)
- Disobey left turn only sign-motor vehicle
- Possess prohibited drug
- Class A motor vehicle exceed speed > 45km/h – estimated
- Common assault
The Yagoona man was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court later today (Saturday 17 June 2023).
Police also suspended the man’s driver’s licence.
There were no reports of any person being seriously injured.
