An 89-year-old man will re-appear in court today charged following an investigation into the sexual assault of a girl in the Illawarra region.
Earlier this month, the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad commenced an investigation into reports a girl had been sexual abused by a man known to her between January 2017 and May 2018 in Unanderra.
Following extensive inquiries, detectives attended a home in Unanderra and arrested an 89-year-old man about 1pm yesterday (Wednesday 17 June 2020).
He was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with two counts of assault with intent sexual intercourse child (aged between 10 and 14).
Police will allege the man invited the girl, aged 10 at the time, onto his property before sexually assaulting her.
The 89-year-old was refused bail and appeared at Wollongong Local Court yesterday, where he was formally bail refused to re-appear at the same court today (Thursday 18 June 2020).
The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect.
