Strike Force Vulcan officers commenced an investigative operation in relation to a number of deliberately lit bushfires in the Star Swamp area North Beach during the 2021/2022 season. The Star Swamp bushland is heritage listed.
The investigation continued during the 2022/2023 season with further bushfires being lit.
Due to their extensive investigation on Tuesday 11 October 2023 a man was arrested after being observed by Arson Squad detectives allegedly lighting fires within the Star Swamp.
A 70-year-old man from North Beach has been charged with:-
• Eight counts of Criminal Damage by Fire.
This offence carries a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment.
Bail was refused and he is due to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court today, Wednesday 11 October 2023.
