About 5.45pm (Wednesday 27 February 2019), a marked police vehicle was stopped at a red traffic light at the intersection of Crown and Railway Streets, when a Ford Falcon crashed into the back of it.
The Ford driver, a 56-year-old man, was subjected to a roadside breath test which returned a positive result.
He was arrested and taken to Wollongong Police Station where he returned an alleged breath analysis reading of 0.071
The Wollongong man was issued a Field Court Attendance Notice for the offence of low-range PCA.
He is due to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 9 April 2019.
Both vehicles sustained minor damage, and no one was injured.
Inspector Walker of Wollongong Police District, said officers working within the Wollongong and Lake Illawarra districts are intent on keeping our road users safe.
“The police here regularly stop drivers to perform random roadside breath or drug testing. In this instance, not only has this man decided to drive while allegedly over the limit, he made it obvious by virtually handing himself into officers,” Inspector Walker said.
