Two men have been charged after two police officers were allegedly assaulted in the state’s Riverina region overnight.
Just after 1.15am (Wednesday 18 May 2022), officers from Riverina Police District were called to a home on Hurley Street, Cootamundra, following reports of a neighbour dispute.
Police will allege a 45-year-old man was armed with a knife and threatened officers and became verbally abusive. Following directions to drop the knife, he complied, before allegedly assaulting officers during his arrest.
A 51-year-old man then left the home and also allegedly verbally abused and assaulted the officers before he, too, was arrested.
Both men were taken to Cootamundra Police Station where the younger man was charged with six offences,
- Armed with intent to commit indictable offence
- Assault officer in execution of duty
- Use offensive language in/near public place/school
- Possess/attempt to, prescribed restricted substance, and
- Stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (personal) (two counts)
He was refused bail to appear in Cowra Local Court today (Wednesday 18 May 2022).
The older man was charged with assault officer in execution of duty, and use offensive language in/near public place/school.
He was granted conditional bail to appear in Cootamundra Local Court on Monday 6 June 2022.
The two senior constables did not require medical treatment.
