Two people have been charged with multiple offences after a police officer was injured while attempting to stop a stolen vehicle in Sydney’s south yesterday.
About 3.45pm (Thursday 25 April 2019), two officers attached to Sutherland Traffic and Highway Patrol Command attempted to stop a Toyota Corolla – believed to be stolen – on the Princes Highway at Engadine.
A male senior constable was approaching the hatchback, when the male driver allegedly reversed, hitting four vehicles including the fully-marked Highway Patrol car.
The officer was injured when he was allegedly struck by the hatchback’s door as the driver and his female passenger attempted leave the scene. The couple were arrested after a short foot pursuit and were taken to Sutherland Police Station.
A 35-year-old man, from Belmore, has now been charged with seven offences: use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, assault officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, drive in a manner dangerous to the public, drive whilst disqualified, take and drive conveyance without consent, deal with property proceeds of crime, and have goods in custody suspected of being stolen.
He was refused bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court today (Friday 26 April 2019).
The passenger, a 36-year-old woman from Rosebery, was issued a Future Court Attendance Notice for three offences: be carried in conveyance without consent, enter vehicle without consent, and deal with property proceeds of crime. She is due to appear before Sutherland Local Court on Thursday 16 May 2019.
The injured officer was treated at the scene for leg injuries before being taken to Sutherland Hospital for further treatment. He has since been discharged.
