Police in top gear in preparation for MotoGP

Operation Motosafe is well underway in Western region, with police putting a focus on the safety of motorcyclists. With the Pramac Generac Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix 2019 taking place this weekend, police are expecting additional visitors to be drawn to the area.

Eastern Region Inspector Paul Bruders said that the Grand Prix is a major focus of the operation and people can expect to see a highly visible police presence on the road to ensure visitors to Phillip Island arrive safely.

“The MotoGP is a big ticket event that many motorcycle enthusiasts have in their calendar and attend each year,” Inspector Bruders said.

“With this in mind we expect to see additional bikes on the road, as many people to ride to get to the event.”

Between 25 and 27 October, police will be on patrol in and around the race track and on all roads leading to Phillip Island.

“This year motorcyclists are overrepresented in road trauma and need them to do everything they can to make themselves as safe as possible, including knowing their limitations, riding within their capabilities, wearing protective clothing and riding to the conditions,” Inspector Bruders said.

“It’s also important for other motorists to be aware of motorcyclists and their vulnerability. We will be targeting all aspects of road policing and all types of road users where risk-taking behaviour is evident.”

Operation Motosafe will run until 31 October and is focused on reducing injuries and fatal collisions of motorcyclists in Eastern region.

It is designed to ensure a maximum visible policing presence to reduce road trauma on Victoria’s roads, in particular involving motorcycles and will run in Monash, Boroondara, Whitehorse, Manningham, Maroondah, Yarra Ranges, Knox, Shepparton, Mitchell, Benalla, Wangaratta, Wodonga, Baw Baw, Bass Coast, Latrobe, East Gippsland and Wellington Police Service Areas (PSAs).
