Ballarat Family Violence Investigation Unit are investigating the death of a Mount Clear man on 13 December.
Police were called to reports of an assault at an address on Highfield Avenue in Mount Clear on 27 November.
An 82-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
A 39-year-old man was arrested at the scene.
The man of no fixed address, known to the victim, was charged with assault and remanded in custody.
The Mount Clear man, who remained in hospital, has since died.
The Homicide Squad are assisting the investigation.
The exact cause of the man’s death if yet to be determined and police will prepare a report for the coroner.
