Detectives from Port Phillip Crime Investigation Unit are investigating an attempted armed robbery that occurred in South Melbourne last month.
Investigators have been told the victim, a 47-year-old woman, was standing in line at an ATM at the intersection of Clarendon and Dorcas Street on Wednesday 25 August about 4.25pm.
An unknown woman approached the victim from behind and put her arms around the victim, whilst holding a sharp object to the victim’s back.
The offender made demands for the victim to hand over money before a number of passers-by intervened and dragged the offender away from the victim.
The offender fled south on Clarendon Street towards Bank Street.
She is perceived to be approximately 25-35 years old with short black hair, about 163cm tall and was wearing a black puffer jacket, black hat, shorts and runners.
The offender also had a tattoo on the left side of neck comprising of one or two words in calligraphy style writing.
An image been released of a woman who police believe will be able to assist with the investigation.
Police are also appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, in particular those members of the public who intervened, to contact them.
