Police lay charges – Multiple offences in Katherine

Northern Territory Police have arrested a 31-year-old man after police located illicit items in his vehicle.

An off-duty police officer observed the man driving a vehicle in an erratic matter on the Stuart Highway near Adelaide River around 10:30am on 17 October. The vehicle was later observed speeding by on duty members approximately 30 kilometres north of Katherine around 12:00pm the same day.

Police apprehended the vehicle and conducted a drug saliva test which returned a positive result for methamphetamine. Drug Detector Dog Hugo was deployed and provided a conditioned response to the man and his vehicle. A subsequent search found approximately 14 grams of cannabis in the man’s underwear.

Police located and seized the following from the man’s vehicle:

  • A machete style knife
  • 2 x clip seal bags of cannabis
  • 1 x clip seal bag containing 1 gram of methamphetamine
  • A glass ice pipe
  • 2 x tomahawk axes
  • A packet of un-used clip seal deal bags

The man was arrested and conveyed to the Katherine Watch House where he participated in another drug analysis and returned a positive result for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

He was charged with:

  • Drive with Prohibited Drug in Body
  • Exceed Speed 0 – 15km hr Over
  • Possess Schedule 2 Dangerous Drug – Public Place
  • Possess Schedule 1 Dangerous Drug – Public Place
  • Possess Thing – Administer Dangerous Drug
  • Possess Controlled Weapon

He was also charged with drive with prohibited blood in drug in relation to a motor vehicle crash at Pine Creek on 16 June 2019.

He is due to appear in Darwin Local Court on 31 October 2019.
