Police Lay Charges Over Fatal Crash At Thirroul

A driver has been charged following a fatal crash in the Wollongong area last month.

About 1.50pm on Friday 16 February 2024, emergency services were called to Lawrence Hargrave Drive, Thirroul, following reports a Hino truck and a BMW SUV had been involved in a collision.

Two male passengers in the truck were ejected. A 43-year-old man died at the scene while a 40-year-old man was treated by paramedics before being airlifted to Liverpool Hospital where he remains after undergoing surgery.

The truck driver, a 39-year-old man, was also treated and airlifted to Westmead Hospital where he underwent surgery before being released.

The BMW driver, a 40-year-old woman was freed by Fire and Rescue and airlifted to St George Hospital where she remains.

Officers attached to Wollongong Police District established a crime scene which was forensically examined by specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit.

Following mechanical examination of the truck, crash investigators attended a Colyton home yesterday (Tuesday 12 March 2024) and arrested the 39-year-old man.

He was taken to Penrith Police Station and charged with dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous, two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive manner dangerous, negligent driving – occasioning death, and negligent driving – occasioning grievous bodily harm.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday 4 June 2024.
