Northern Territory Police in the Wadeye region have been working tirelessly to reduce the impacts of the incursion of illicit alcohol into vulnerable communities across the region.
A key focus of these efforts has been the development of a number of key relationships with people across the region who are keen to support minimising the secondary supply of alcohol.
Police were yesterday able to target a number of specific locations in Peppimenarti from which alcohol was allegedly being sold at grossly inflated prices. As a result of those efforts a 52-year-old male from the community was arrested.
Acting Commander Kirk Pennuto said, “This has been a protracted and complex investigation that in addition to yesterday’s arrest, has culminated in the lawful search of a residence during which a substantial sum of cash and a large quantity of liquor – mostly spirits in 750ml and 1L bottles – was located. Police believe this liquor was destined for sale in remote Alcohol Protected Areas.”
The man appeared in Darwin Local court via video link today to face charges including:
- Unauthorised sale of liquor
- Supply Liquor Alcohol Protected Area
- Possess Liquor intent to supply in alcohol protected area
He has been remanded in custody to appear at Darwin Local Court tomorrow.

“The substantial seizure of alcohol and the disruption of what will be alleged to have been an unlawful commercial enterprise will make the community of Peppimenarti a safer place.
“Police will continue to target those who seek to profit from the illegal supply of alcohol to vulnerable communities. Their activities contribute to antisocial behaviour, violence and poverty. This is not acceptable and we will come after you and hold you to account.”
