Northern Territory Police have apprehended two people in separate incidents following assaults on police in the northern suburbs yesterday.
Around 3:30pm, members from the Territory Safety Division responded to a report of a 13-year-old female sitting on a traffic island along Vanderlin Drive, Wulagi.
Upon attendance, police held concerns for her safety after the youth was allegedly involved with volatile substance abuse. A decision was made to place the youth in protective custody, while waiting for assisting services to make an assessment of her.
Whilst being placed into protective custody, the youth spat saliva at one officer, after scratching and biting the second officer.
Later that evening, members from the Territory Safety Division were responding to a group at a bus stop along Kalymnos Drive, Karama when the group became hostile towards police, resulting in a male spitting saliva in the face of one officer.
The adult male was arrested and charged with assault a member of the police force.
He is due to appear in Darwin Local Court today.
Acting Senior Sergeant Alex Noonan said, “Assaults on police is an unacceptable act.
“Such actions not only jeopardize public safety but also erode the trust between communities and police.
“We continue to urge the public to contact police through 131 444 if you witness crime or antisocial behaviour or triple zero in an emergency.”
