Police officer assaulted in Whyalla Stuart

A police officer has been seriously injured after being assaulted in Whyalla Stuart last night.

On Thursday 29 June, police were conducting inquiries regarding a missing teenager when they spotted the 15-year-old boy in a park on Wittwer Street about 10.20pm.

The boy had been reported missing earlier that evening by family members.

When an officer approached the boy to check on his welfare he hit the male officer twice in the head with the officer’s torch before fleeing the scene.

Further patrols came to the assistance of the injured officer and rushed him to the Whyalla Hospital where he received treatment for the injuries.

The officer aged 34 has since been discharged from hospital.

Police searched the area and located the boy at his home about 11.45pm.

A 15-year-old boy from Whyalla Stuart has been arrested and charged with attempt murder.

He has been refused police bail and will appear in the Whyalla Magistrates Court today, Friday 30 June.
