The NSW Police Force is pleased with the behaviour of crowds attending the Anzac Day march and commemoration ceremonies across Sydney today.
Operation Anzac Day 2023, a high-visibility policing strategy, was established to provide a safe and secure environment for Anzac Day events.
General duties officers assisted by specialist units will remain throughout the Sydney CBD, patrolling ceremonial areas, to ensure the community continues to enjoy the evening respectfully.
Operation Commander, Assistant Commissioner Scott Whyte, said that the majority of those who attended today’s commemorations showed respect towards each other and our service personnel.
“Every year we come together as a community to recognise the courage and sacrifice of our servicemen and women, both past and present, and that is exactly what Sydney did today.
“More than 7,000 attended the Dawn Service and over 11,500 marched.”
“It was great to see the Anzac spirit on display with crowds cheering on veterans, their families and members of the community in marches, which have been both safe and successful.
“While police responded to a few isolated incidents, we were pleased to see crowds paying their respects appropriately on one of the country’s most important national days.”
“As Anzac Day commemorations continue, all those who are still be enjoying the afternoon are reminded to act responsibly, know your limits and look out for each other.” Assistant Commissioner Scott Whyte said.
Of note, a 21-year-old man was arrested after allegedly assaulting two officers on Goulburn Street, Surry Hills, just after 4am (Tuesday 25 April 2023).
During the arrest, police will allege that whilst attempting to speak with the man, he became violent and bit one officer on the hand.
He was taken to Surry Hills Police Station where he was charged with assault police officer in execution of duty, assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm and hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty.
The man was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court today (Tuesday 25 April 2023).
In a separate incident, a 41-year-old man was arrested for allegedly failing to comply with a move on direction.
He was taken to Surry Hills Police Station where he was charged with refuse/fail to comply with direction and stalk/intimidate intend fear physical harm.
He was bail refused to appear before the Downing Centre Local Court tomorrow (Wednesday 26 April 2023).
