Police praise New Year’s crowds across Central Queensland

Revellers were overall well behaved as they celebrated at New Year’s Eve events across the Central Queensland Police Region overnight.

Crowds gathered at entertainment hubs, clubs and licensed venues with the overwhelming majority enjoying the new year celebrations.

Although police were kept busy, there were only a small number of arrests in each police district.

Mackay District

Around 2,000 people attended the fireworks display at Bluewater Quay at 9pm and about 5,000 people celebrated in the Safe Night Precinct.

Overall crowds were well behaved with only one person charged with public nuisance and another person with drug possession within the precinct.

Six drivers were charged with drink driving and three motorists returned positive readings for drug driving.

Capricornia District

Crowds grew to about 2,500 people at the 8pm fireworks event at the Memorial Park in Gladstone.

Officers reported no significant incidents with only minor public nuisance offences across the various celebrations in the Capricornia District.

One driver was charged with drink driving after providing a BAC of 0.170 in Agnes Water just after midnight while another driver was charged at Kirkwood around 4am with a BAC of 0.180.

Wide Bay Burnett District

Other than the serious assault of a man at Rainbow Beach, crowds were relatively well behaved at New Year’s Eve celebrations across the Wide Bay Burnett District.

Sunshine Coast District

Around 12,000 people packed into Kings Beach at Caloundra to celebrate the new year.

Generally, crowds across the Coast were well behaved.

A 20-year-old man was seriously assaulted at Noosa Heads around 11pm and a 35-year-old man was arrested at Mooloolaba after a 26-year-old man was struck in the head around 1am.
