Police are investigating the circumstances of a serious traffic crash at Hope Vale overnight.
About 10.40pm, officers were conducting static speed enforcement along Hope Vale Road when a car allegedly sped past them.
A short time later, officers patrolling along Thiele Street noticed the car had crashed into a tree and caught fire.
Police immediately extinguished the fire and rendered first aid to the 34-year-old female driver and three-year-old child located inside the vehicle.
The pair were conveyed to Cairns Hospital where the boy remains in a critical condition. The 34-year-old woman suffered minor injuries.
Officers from the Forensic Crash Unit are continuing investigations.
