Police Search For Weapon Along Eyre Highway

Police will be searching the Eyre Highway today and tomorrow (Wednesday 10 April) following the robbery and death of a man earlier this year.

About 10am on Saturday 20 January the victim, a 67-year-old local man, was found unresponsive with a serious head injury at on the Eyre Highway, Scotdesco in the States Far West. Investigations revealed the victim had been assaulted and robbed before his white 1992 Mitsubishi Pajero with trailer (pictured) was stolen.

Later that day, a 39-year-old man from Thevenard and a 28-year-old woman from Yalata, were arrested and charged with aggravated robbery. Both remain in custody and will appear before the Port Augusta Magistrates Court on 1 May.

The Pajero was later found abandoned on Fowler’s Bay Road at the junction of the Eyre Highway.

The victim sadly passed away in hospital on Wednesday 20 March and his death was declared a major crime.

Today, Tuesday 9 April, police will be searching for a weapon along the Highway and surrounding areas as it is believed the two suspects hitch-hiked from the junction of Fowler’s Bay Road to Nundroo, a distance of approximately 31 kilometres.

Police are appealing for anyone with Dash Cam footage from the date, or who recalls providing a lift to two people on Saturday 20 January to come forward.

Today’s search will involve members from STAR Operations Section, Security Response Section, Mounted Section, Eyre Western LSA Criminal Investigation Branch and SES members. Searching will occur on both sides of the Eyre Highway between Scotdesco Community (near Bookabie) and Nundroo.

There will be speed restrictions in place and motorists are advised to exercise appropriate caution when travelling this section of the Eyre Highway during this period.
