Police update: Cyclone Watch – Gulf of Carpentaria

A Tropical Cyclone Watch remains in place for coastal communities in the Gulf of Carpentaria, from Alyangula to the Queensland border.

The tropical low is developing near Groote Eylandt and is forecasted to develop further near the western Gulf of Carpentaria coast during today and Tuesday.

The Bureau of Meteorology is expecting the tropical low to remain below cyclone strength however, people in the area are likely to experience gale force winds with damaging gusts up to 90km/hour around Groote Eylandt on Tuesday morning. Severe thunderstorms with damaging wind and heavy rain could also occur within the watch area.

Incident Controller, Superintendent Paul Faustmann said: “Local police in the area have activated local emergency plans and are actively engaged in preparation for the possibility of a cyclone.”

The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises people in the affected communities and surrounding areas to take action to prepare for a cyclone, and continue to listen for the next advice.
