Police Update: Operation Munster In Alice Springs

Northern Territory Police continuing to investigate the that occurred in Alice Springs earlier this week.

Since the violence on Tuesday 26 March 2024, police have arrested 8 males with 5 now having been charged for various stages of the offending.

A 16-year-old has been charged with Engage in Violent conduct, Criminal Damage and Aggravated assault.

A 17 and 18-year-old have been charged with Engage in violent conduct and Criminal Damage.

A second 18-year-old has been charged with Engage in violent conduct, Criminal Damage, Aggravated assault and Going armed in public.

Finally, a 22-year-old has been charged with Going armed in public and Fail to comply with an order relating to a riot.

Investigations remain ongoing and detectives from Crime Command and Strike Force Viper expect further arrests and charges over the coming days.

Since the emergency situation was declared Police and Territory Families, Housing and Communities (TFHC) Youth Out Reach Engagement Team (YORETs) have collectively engaged with 127 young people in the Alice Springs High Risk Area (HRA).

Additional resources have arrived in Alice Springs and police are patrolling not just the HRA, but the wider suburbs. Additional YORET/Co-responder staff are also working through the night and Senior Aboriginal TFHC staff are undertaking next day proactive follow ups with young people and their families. This is occurring for young people who are engaged within the HRA overnight and other young people and families who are being actively case managed by TFHC teams.

A curfew commenced on 27 March 2024, and will be in effect for 14 days between the hours 6:00pm to 6:00am, unless sooner revoked or extended.

Regional Controller, Assistant Commissioner Peter Kennon said, “Police will continue to be highly visible both day and night across Alice Springs including the High Risk Area.

“We are continuing to undertake a common sense approach to the conditions of the emergency situation. Young people may be engaged and directed to leave the High Risk Area if they don’t have a valid reason for being there, such as attending a job.

“Police Officers will be posted at all licensed takeaway alcohol premises across Alice Springs during opening hours and during the emergency situation, while also supporting the national Easter road safety campaign across the region.

“Generally, Government agencies and our Non-Government partners will be providing a response in the High Risk Area, including coordination and attendance at a range of planned school holiday activities to ensure that young people can safely attend scheduled events.”
