Police update: PSPA revoked at Newtown

Two men have been taken into custody following an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) at Newtown in Toowoomba this afternoon (December 21).

At approximately 10.45am police attended a Park Street property in relation to a search warrant.

Police began negotiations with two men in the property, who were believed to be in possession of a firearm.

Five persons who were also in the property were safely removed from the premises.

A PSPA declaration was made just before midday, with an exclusion zone encompassing Tor Street, Park Street and Dalmany Street.

It will be alleged during the course of negotiations shots were fired both from the premises and by police.

No one was physically injured.

At approximately 5.40pm, a 44-year-old Toowoomba man and 35-year-old Toowoomba man were taken into custody.

The PSPA was subsequently revoked at approximately 6pm.

A crime scene has been declared at the address.

Investigations into the incident are underway, including investigations by the Ethical Standards Command with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission.
