Tasmania Police is urging all boat users to ensure their vessel and safety equipment is in proper working order as summer approaches.
“Statistics show the majority of boating incidents occur over holiday periods, and as we head into the festive season it’s timely to remind boat users of their safety requirements,” said Sergeant Damian Bidgood from Marine and Rescue Services.
“We want people to enjoy their time on the water, but we want them to make it home safely.”
“It’s vital that boats and safety equipment are in good condition and have been serviced regularly,” Sergeant Bidgood said.
“Equipment such as life jackets, flares, and emergency beacons should be stored on board in a place that’s easily accessible if needed in an emergency.”
If you’re heading out on the water:
- Check the weather conditions, tell someone where you are planning to go and what time you’ll be back, and let them know if those plans change.
- Be aware of your surroundings, and don’t take unnecessary risks on the water.
- Ensure you have all of the essential safety gear, including life jackets, serviceable flares, mobile phones in water-proof covers and marine radios, and that these are all in good working order.
- Make sure everyone on board is wearing a life jacket.
- Check that life jackets are properly serviced and maintained, and for inflatable life jackets, that the person wearing it knows how to activate it if needed.
- Don’t drink. Keep yourself and others safe by staying under the limit.
As always, marine police will have a strong presence on the water throughout Tasmania during the summer period.
