Port Phillip proud to fly Rainbow Flag

Yesterday morning in a moving ceremony, Port Phillip Council raised the Rainbow Flag in support of Sunday’s Midsumma Pride March. Celebrating its 25th birthday this year, Pride March is a much-loved annual event which celebrates inclusion and diversity.

Mayor Bernadene Voss said the Rainbow Flag was a symbol of hope and solidarity for the LGBTIQ community.

“We’re proud to fly the Rainbow Flag ahead of the Pride March’s milestone anniversary this Sunday. Port Phillip has been a major sponsor and home to the Pride March from the very beginning and we continue to promote a welcoming and tolerant community,” Cr Voss said.

In support of the March, Council has contributed $90,000 in direct funding and $50,000 of in-kind services to this important event.

“Port Phillip has the reputation of being a City where everyone is welcome and we are proud to demonstrate our commitment to the LGBTIQ community,” Cr Voss said.

“As the Marchers pass the Victorian Pride Centre, they will be able to see how much closer we are to having a hub of culture, health and support services – as well as a home for many of the LGBTIQ groups and organisations we know and love.”

Midsumma CEO Karen Bryant said Midsumma Pride March continues to be a vital community and cultural event – 25 years on from the first March.

“At a time when human rights for our communities continue to be threatened, and prejudice is still a very real issue for many, coming together for Pride is a very special and important day for all of us,” Ms Bryant said.

“We sincerely thank the City of Port Phillip for its long-standing financial and logistical support,”

Midsumma Festival runs from 19 January to 9 February 2020, with 30 events to be held in Port Phillip.
