Taking place during Youth Week, the Port Stephens Battle of the Arts competition is a chance for young people to showcase their creative talents.
Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer said it’s an exciting new opportunity for Port Stephens’ next generation of young talent to make their mark on the local creative arts scene.
“Our very first Battle of the Arts will nurture local talent by showcasing the creativity and flair of young musicians, dancers, actors, poets and storytellers,” Mayor Palmer said.
“Our Youth Advisory Panel has been hosting smaller scale events that showcase young local artists for a few years now, so we know there are lots of gifted young people in Port Stephens.
“With Battle of the Arts, we’ll be able to bring all that talent under one roof and allow our emerging artists to gain performance experience, build their connections and boost collaboration and creativity.
“The performer(s) judged best on the day will take home a major prize of $500 which will be a nice boost to help fund their creative ambitions,” he added.
The Battle of the Arts is born from Council’s 2020 – 2025 Youth Strategy, where Council will ‘plan and deliver events offering young local artists and musicians the chance to share their talent’.
“Council’s Vibrant Places team have been out and about this week, visiting local high schools to promote this new event and encourage applications from young people aged between 12 and 18 years old,” Mayor Palmer added.
The inaugural Battle of the Arts is made possible thanks to funding from the NSW Government in celebration of NSW Youth Week. Youth Week is a week-long celebration held in early April each year that’s organised by young people, for young people all across NSW.
Applications close at 11:59pm on Sunday 3 March 2024, with the Battle of the Arts competition taking place on Friday 12 April 2024.
