Council has acquired 12 new artworks from the biannual Artists’ Book Award to be exhibited at Manly Art Gallery and Museum (MAG&M) before joining Council’s permanent Library collection.
Every two years the Northern Beaches Library Service holds an Artists’ Book Award attracting entries from all over the globe.
This year, 96 artists entered from countries as far flung as Argentina and were whittled down to 12 acquisitions, by a judging panel comprised of Manly Art Gallery & Museum senior curator Katherine Roberts and Sydney illustrator Ben Brown.
The acquired works will be exhibited at MAG&M from 3 March until 16 April.
Recognised for outstanding artistic expression, these contributions to art take the function of a book as their initial inspiration and then bend the rules.
Northern Beaches Mayor Michael Regan said these beautiful and diverse artworks will make a lasting contribution to the Library’s creative resources.
“Each time these awards are held, we get a real insight into the past two years of life. It’s a fantastic time capsule because in these books we always see strong themes emerge, that connect them to a particular time in history, and to a period of life we’ve all lived through together.
“What’s exciting for the community, is that these are permanently available to view at the library and can inspire artists and book lovers for generations to come,” Mayor Regan said.
These new books will be added to the 97 artists’ books already in the permanent collection across Northern Beaches Council Libraries.
