Pre-traineeship program to fill vital disability support roles

Training provider Hessel Group – in collaboration with ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Disability Services – is offering 30 South Australians an opportunity to enter the disability sector through an innovative pre-traineeship program.

The five-week EduCare Disability Pre-Traineeship Program allows participants to learn in the workplace and earn four units of accredited training towards a Certificate III in Individual Support.

Minister for Industry and Skills David Pisoni says this project will help meet the demand for skilled workers in one of the state’s fastest-growing industries.

“The roll-out of the NDIS in South Australia is predicted to create around 6,000 full-time equivalent jobs in our disability sector,” he said.

“In addition to the widespread economic benefit of filling these roles, South Australians with a disability deserve quality care, and so we need to attract experienced and highly-skilled staff to the industry.

“Unfortunately, the uptake of traineeships relevant to disability is in steep decline, with the number of commencements falling consistently from 2013 to 2018.”

Minister Pisoni said these measures demonstrate a Marshall Liberal Government commitment to reverse the trend by committing to support this Skilling South Australia project.

“The EduCare Disability Pre-Traineeship Program was designed specifically to support unemployed or underemployed South Australians by encouraging them to take the first step towards a meaningful and rewarding role,” he said.

“The cohort will emerge equipped with the knowledge and experience required to begin a formal traineeship and to go on to achieve a full Certificate III in Individual Support.

“To accommodate this, group training organisations CEG and Maxima have committed to employing a majority of the participants as full-time trainees after they have completed the initial five-week program.

“The training will be facilitated by Hessel’s registered training organisation Enhance Training, which has been consistently acknowledged for outstanding training initiatives.”
