The City of Greater Geelong will advocate to the Victorian Government for a renewed focus on preserving and growing the environmental, tourism and community values of Serendip Sanctuary and the You Yangs Regional Park.
Parks Victoria has been exploring options to revitalise the You Yangs Regional Park and Serendip Sanctuary through the You Yangs Precinct Master Plan.
Following a successful motion from Windermere Ward Councillor Kylie Grzybek, City of Greater Geelong Acting CEO, Kaarina Phyland, will write to Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio requesting Council work with the Government to realise the potential of both sites.
City will request the Victorian Government explore opportunities to work together to support the delivery of the masterplan.
Greater Geelong Mayor Peter Murrihy;
The You Yangs Regional Park is one of the major attractions in the region and contributes to Greater Geelong and the Bellarine region’s $1.1 billion tourism industry.
Serendip Sanctuary is home to hundreds of native animals, including rare and endangered species and we feel it is important to protect this habitat.
We want to get the best plan in place for the benefit of our environment, native wildlife and local communities.
In the correspondence, the CEO will request the Government stop relocating animals and removing enclosures at Serendip Sanctuary.
Windermere Ward councillor Kylie Grzybek;
There were more than 500 submissions during the consultation process, which shows how deeply the community values these assets in the northern areas of Geelong.
It’s crucial that we continue to explore opportunities for Council to work together with the Victorian Government to attract the funding needed to realise the potential to implement the masterplan now, and for future generations.
Funding to deliver the You Yangs and Serendip Sanctuary Precinct Masterplan is a priority project for the City of Greater Geelong to ensure it retains its status as an enviable tourism attraction.
