The Miles Government’s historic $350 million investment towards the significant expansion of one of Queensland’s busies hospitals, the Princess Alexandra Hospital’s is starting to take shape.
Artist impressions of the multi-million dollar project released today show the plans for the development which includes 219 new acute inpatient and 30 new ICU beds, 13 new cancer treatment bays and reconfigured specialist treatment spaces.
Five new floors – made up of four clinical spaces and a plant and machinery floor – will be stacked on top of the emergency department to accommodate the changes.
The works will deliver the equivalent of adding almost three full rugby league fields to the PA.
Once the project opens in the second half of 2026, it will improve patient flow and provide them with greater access to acute care, intensive care and emergency services in Brisbane’s south.
The artist’s impression details how the new-look section of the PA will integrate into the existing building and house the additional beds and treating equipment.
The project is a key part of the Queensland Government’s almost $10 billion Capital Expansion Program to deliver new and upgraded health and hospital infrastructure across the state. This is the nation’s largest health capital program.
The works are in addition to the $5.8 million refurbishment and expansion of the renal high dependency unit is well underway, which is delivering an additional three treatment spaces.
