Private art teacher charged over historical sexual abuse of student, NSW

A private art teacher has been charged following an investigation into alleged historical sexual offences and indecent assault of a young student in Sydney’s south.

In December 2019, detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad commenced an investigation following reports a 12-year-old girl had been sexually abused by a man known to her.

Following extensive investigations, detectives arrested an 83-year-old man at a home in Sydney’s south just after 8am today (Wednesday 5 February 2020).

Shortly after the arrest, a search warrant was executed at the home, where detectives seized documents.

The man was taken to Kogarah Police Station and charged with 10 offences including six counts of indecent assault person under 16 years, two counts of have sexual intercourse with person between 10 and 14 years, incite victim under 10 years to commit indecent act and sexual intercourse with child under age of 10 years.

Police will allege in court that the man sexually abused the girl on a number of occasions at his at-home art studio in Sydney’s south between 2013 and 2018, when she was aged between six and 11.

The man has been refused bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court today (Wednesday 5 February 2020).

Investigations are continuing.
