Early works for a transformational project in the State’s north are expected to be underway soon, with tenders to be called for this weekend.
The $43.6 million Northern Suburbs Community Hub development in Mowbray will particularly help to address a shortage of indoor sporting facilities in Launceston.
Minister for Sport and Recreation, Nic Street, said tenders for early works on the project will be called from this Saturday, 3 June 2023.
“The hub will improve access to community, sport, and recreation infrastructure and programs in the northern suburbs as well as give locals a new facility they can be proud of,” he said.
“In partnership with the Australian Government and City of Launceston, the Rockliff Liberal Government has committed $27.5 million over the next two years to support this critical project.
“Part of the Launceston City Deal, the facility will include new indoor multi-use courts to address the shortage of indoor sporting facilities in Launceston.
“It will also include a designated gymnastics area, rock climbing, weightlifting and boxing facilities, outdoor activity areas, café and spectator seating, change rooms, offices, meeting room and administration facilities, and onsite parking.
“More than just a sporting facility, it will also provide fun, recreational opportunities for local people and a place to connect with others and local organisations.
“It will deliver programs for young people and the local community, and provide employment, mentoring and personal development opportunities for young Tasmanians.”
A suitable contractor is being sought to undertake early works that will get the site ready for the full development.
The early works are expected to be underway in August while work continues with the key stakeholders to finalise the design for the new multi-purpose facility.
A main works tender package is expected later in the year with construction to start in early 2024 and be finished by mid-2025.
