Property offences targeted, NSW

Three people will face court after being arrested for property offences in the state’s north west.

Officers attached to New England Police District have been targeting property related offences under Operation Jackal 2 in the Inverell and surrounding areas that have resulted in the arrests of a juvenile and two adults in separate incidents yesterday (Friday 2 December 2022).

  • Shortly after midnight officers spoke to an 18-year-old man on Stirling Street, Inverell. It will be alleged that when police searched the man they allegedly located a balaclava, a knife and three sets of car keys. When the man was placed under arrest, he allegedly attempted to resist arrest before being taken to Inverell Police Station. He was charged with posses means of disguising face with intent to commit indictable offence, carry cutting weapon upon apprehension, hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty and goods in personal custody suspected being stolen. The man was refused bail and appeared before Inverell Local Court yesterday (Friday 2 December 2022), where he was granted conditional bail to reappear before the same court on Thursday 19 January 2023.
  • About 10.30am a 15-year-old boy was arrested on Eugene Street, Inverell, on outstanding warrants relating to aggravated break and enter, take and drive conveyance, be carried in conveyance, obtain financial advantage by deception, goods in custody, enter enclosed lands and multiple traffic offences. He was also charged with possess prohibited drug after allegedly being found with a small amount of cannabis. Further inquiries concerning unrelated matters resulted in the boy also being charged with seven additional offences including two counts of aggravated break and enter, two counts of take and drive conveyance, take and drive conveyance, be carried in conveyance, dishonestly obtain property by deception, drive conveyance taken without consent of owner and shoplifting. He was refused bail and appeared at a children’s court yesterday (Friday 2 December 2022). The boy was refused bail to re-appear at the same court on Thursday 8 December 2022.
  • On Thursday (1 December 2022), police commenced an investigation after a home had been broken into on Mawson Street, Inverell, about 1pm that day. Following extensive inquiries officers arrested a 28-year-old woman at a hotel on Byron Street, Inverell, at 5.15pm. A search of the woman allegedly found her to be in possession of drug administering equipment. She was taken to Inverell Police Station and charged with break and enter house etc steal value

Officer in charge of Inverell Police Station, Chief Inspector Rowan O’Brien, said property crime will not be tolerated and is being targeted with earnest.

“Under the auspice of Operation Jackal 2, we have a dedicated team of police officers that are determined to target those individuals who think they can steal from their fellow citizens and get away with it,” Chief Inspector O’Brien said.

“We have a great success rate in identifying offenders, this this can’t be achieved without the support of the community, and I am pleased to say we have this support.”

“I would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to ensure you have the appropriate security measures on your homes and be sure to secure your car when away from it.”
