Currawong Reserve in West Pennant Hills will become a favourite meeting spot for walkers, bike riders and wildlife lovers alike thanks to proposed major works by The Hills Shire Council.

The 5.1-hectare parkland, which is home to the endangered Blue Gum High Forest, will be improved with a new 160-metre boardwalk and a 936-metre shared pathway that will circumnavigate the Reserve.

Council will also enhance Bellamys Creek, which runs through the reserve, with bank stabilisation works at selected areas, as well as introducing small ponds within the creek at strategic locations to provide a habitat for local bird and water life.

“Currawong Reserve is a beautiful oasis in West Pennant Hills and this fantastic project will allow more people to walk, ride and enjoy one of our greenest public spaces,” Mayor Gangemi said.

“The boardwalk and shared pathways have been designed to blend in with the natural environment and will include viewing platforms and seating.

“I’m proud of Council’s role in protecting our local environment and supporting our communities and their access to green and active spaces.

“These efforts will contribute to preserving local habitats and will safeguard them so Hills residents can enjoy them for many years to come.”

Council is also looking at initiatives to enhance the local ecosystem, such as stabilising the creek bank, improvements to drainage infrastructure and identifying and protecting significant trees.

The upper area of the reserve is proposed to have a new pedestrian bridge and a gravel path that will run alongside the creek banks for better connectivity. Plans also include removing invasive weeds and planting vegetation native to the area.

Residents are invited to have their say on the project via Council’s website: .

Submissions are open until Friday 15 September at 5pm.
